Gyros is a Greek meat dish fried on a vertical, rotating skewer, probably from the Ottoman Empire. The name comes from the word newcomer, the Greek Yiros, which is often seen in gyros according to English transliteration. The original version of the Greek name can be traced back to the Turkish word doner (“rotating”); the jyros is a mirror translation of this.
